WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Rafe is a rock musician by night and head of a multi-million dollar family business during the day. Melanie is his former assistant, a wallflower who’s harbored a secret crush on him for years. Someone he’d never even consider sleeping with. But when Melanie decides to leave behind her shy exterior and live out her own sexy bucket list, the two of them are thrown together in a whirlwind affair that pushes both their boundaries.

His to Claim: Part 1 is the first installment in the scintillating erotic serial novel His to Claim, later to be made available as a complete book featuring special bonus material. Don’t miss the other chapters of Opal Carew’s six-part serial out Summer 2014. She’s his to claim–he just doesn’t know it.

 Excerpt

As Melanie stepped outside, Rafe behind her, she regretted that this time with him was about to

end. The tattoo had been painful, but not as bad as she’d anticipated. It had been so nice, though,

having him there to literally hold her hand through it.

“Would you like a ride home?” he asked.

She gazed at him in his jeans and tank top, tattoos visible over his chest and flowing

down his arms and she couldn’t help laughing. “I just got a mental picture of you dressed just as

you are now climbing into that shiny, black limo.”

He shrugged. “Sure, why not? Would you like to ride in the limo?”

She had always wanted to. It seemed so glamorous and luxurious. It would be a taste of

how the other half lived.

“Or, since it’s such a nice day, we could ride my motorcycle.”

She raised her eyebrow. “You have a motorcycle?”

“That’s right. It’s over there.” He nodded his head toward a big, gleaming, burgundy

Harley parked on the street in front of the shop. “But I know some women are a little intimidated

by them.”

Melanie laughed. “Not me. I’ve always wanted to ride one.” She walked to the big

machine and ran her fingers over the soft, black, leather seat. “I would love to ride with you.”

His lips turned up in a devilish grin. “Really?”

She glanced at him and realized her statement might have sounded a little . . . sexual.

Suddenly, an image washed through her of straddling Rafe, and slowly moving up and down on

him, his big erection buried deep inside her. A wild surge of hormones vibrated through her.

As her cheeks blossomed with heat, she flicked her gaze to the seat again. “Um, yeah. It

would be a real adventure. Then I can cross two items off my bucket list—getting a tattoo and

riding a motorcycle.”

“I never knew you had such a wild side.”

Before she could respond, he opened the back compartment and handed her a helmet,

then pulled one on himself.

She opened her bag and pulled out the light sweater she’d brought with her and started to

pull it on. Ever the gentleman, Rafe grabbed it and held it up for her so she could easily push her

arms into the sleeves. As she zipped it up, he pulled a black leather jacket from the storage bin

and pulled it on.

Oh, man, he looked incredibly hot in denim and leather. He mounted the bike and she

climbed on behind him.

Once she was settled, he glanced back at her. “You sure you want to go straight home?”

Their wishes were simple and modest. Fate had other things in store though, and she can be a real bitch sometimes.

– All he wanted was to get the job done and somehow to endure those long months playing nanny to a spoiled little rich girl. Without strangling her with his bare hands in the process. Well, it is going to be much easier said than done.

– All she wanted was to escape the past and live like any other nineteen-year-old girl. Her plan definitely didn’t include the arrogant, tattooed savage, with his awful mohawk hair and lack of social graces, whose only mission was to stick real close and mess up her life.

But, people aren’t always what they seem to be, are they?

Character Interview

Interviewer: Hello, Sasha. It’s nice to have you here today.

Sasha: I’m glad to be here. Thanks for having me!

Interviewer: I’m sure our readers can’t wait to get to know you better, so can we start with you telling us something about you that no one else knows?

Sasha: Oh, you’re starting with the tough ones, I see that. ( smiling ) I’ll have to think about that.

Interviewer: Please, take your time. It can be anything, maybe something from your childhood?

Sasha: Well, there are some things from that time that I haven’t told anybody. Like the big clock in the hallway I broke once.

Interviewer: You didn’t!

Sasha: I’m afraid I did. I was around five, running through the house and playing around, when I saw that it was dinner time. I really didn’t want to stop playing, so I climbed up on a chair, opened the clock face, pulled off the hands and stashed them in the nearest drawer. I felt sure at the time that I’d be saved from having to eat green beans for dinner.

Interviewer: You sure were resourceful. And you knew how to tell the time when you were just five?

Sasha: Of course. Vova thought me.

Interviewer: Your father’s employee Vova?

Sasha: I’ve never seen Vova as just employee. He’s more like favorite uncle of mine, even though we aren’t really family.

Interviewer: You’re close?

Sasha: We were very close when I lived at my father’s place. He was my hero and he always saved me from trouble. When I got up to any mischief, I’d always run to his room and hide there. Like when I took sand from behind the shed and spread it all over the hallway floor.

Interviewer: Why on earth did you do that?

Sasha: I’d watched some cartoon about Indians, and wanted to see if I could read tracks. I was sure I was going to be a hunter when I grew up, and I wanted to practice my tracking skills. I was around seven then.

Interviewer: If I understood well, you didn’t have close connection to your father even then. What about your mom?

Sasha: She was very young when she married my father and I always had impression that she was more like a sister to me than mother. But, when I think of her now, I think she wasn’t mature enough to be a mother.

Interviewer: Why do you think that she wasn’t mature enough? She wasn’t responsible, or…?

Sasha: She was… extreme. In every way. Sometimes, she reminded me of a beautiful wild animal that got trapped and was forced to live in gilded cage. Unlike me, since I’ve always lived like that, my mom had been raised without any restraints and it was really hard for her to get used to having bodyguards following her everywhere.

Interviewer: I suppose it was very hard for you too, living like that, being treated in a different way to your friends. What was the hardest part?

Sasha: Holidays, definitely. I always dreamed of going to the seaside or visiting other countries with my friends, but I was never allowed. Don’t get me wrong, I know it was all for my own good, but even though I wasn’t exactly unhappy, I wasn’t filled with joy either.

Interviewer: And what is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sasha: Being able to decide, in the moment, to go somewhere for a weekend and just packing up your things. Doing that without looking over your shoulder to see if someone’s following you, or having the idea that someone might try to kidnap you round the next corner.

Interviewer: Do you think you’ll ever be able to feel that way? Completely free…

Sasha: Probably not. Habits are really hard to overcome. ( smiling ) But I am really happy now.

Interviewer: And what’s the reason for that bliss? Or should I ask ‘Who?’ … ( laugh )

Sasha: I think you know the answer very well. He came into my life like a storm. An unstoppable hail storm. It was enough for him to look me once with that icy gaze of his, so that I felt he’d poured all of his coldness right over my head and made a total mess of my life. But it seems like even the thickest of icebergs can melt, given time.

Interviewer: From what I know, he’s a difficult man to be around.

Sasha: I would say extremely challenging. I have an urge to kill him in cold blood at least once per day.

Interviewer: Have you tried? ( arching eyebrows )

Sasha: Many times, but he’s so damned agile. He dodges my every strike.

Interviewer: Lucky him. ( laughing )

Sasha: So far… My aim’s getting better every day.

Interviewer: And do you think that you two are a good match?

Sasha: The worst! It’s like putting two crazy, egocentric roosters in the same room. We can’t help trying to strangle each other. At first I was sure we were completely contradictory personalities with nothing in common. But… in time I realized that I was wrong. We’re more similar than I thought, but I’d never admit that in front of him.

Interviewer: How so?

Sasha: We both had the same fear – letting another person inside those defensive walls we built around us, to make them important to us. For Alex, it was the fear of having feelings for someone who he’d eventually need to let go. For me, it was the fear of watching people I loved getting killed.

Interviewer: But you overcame that fear of connecting with people. How?

Sasha: Hmm… there wasn’t any conscious decision like: “OK, from today I’ll let him be something more to me“, you know. It was more like: “Oh, shit. This isn’t happening!” ( laughing )

Interviewer: Were you scared when you realized that?

Sasha: To my core, yes. To be honest, Alex can be a really scary guy sometimes, and realizing you’re in love with someone like that, makes you seriously question your sanity.

Interviewer: He didn’t look very scary to me. I mean, OK, he’s pretty huge and those tattoos definitely don’t make him look cuddly, but he doesn’t look like a serial killer either.

Sasha: Hah! You’ve never seen him trying to strangle some random guy who dares to look at me the ‘wrong’ way.

Interviewer: He’s rather possessive, I see.

Sasha: Like a dog with a bone. It’s not like he tries to control me or anything, just… he doesn’t like seeing good-looking guys around me. Usually, he doesn’t say or do anything and pretends that he doesn’t even notice them, but I can see it in his eyes – that urge to grab me and drag me back to his cave. (laughing) Like a kid who doesn’t like to share his toys with the other children. It’s funny, really. And to be completely honest – it bothers me less then it probably should. I guess I feel flattered.

Interviewer: And what about you? How do you react when you see girls flirting with him? I suppose it happens a lot.

Sasha: All the time, but I’ve found rather productive strategy for those situations. And, it never fails.

Interviewer: Oh? Would you share it with us? I’m sure it would come in handy for our readers.

Sasha: Sure. It’s really simple. Whenever I see a girl flirting with him, I just put on my brightest smile and make she hears me when I say: “Honey, your parole advisor just called. Better call him back or they’ll haul your ass back to jail for another ten stretch.”

Interviewer: Well, that would do the trick.

Sasha: It does, every time.

Interviewer: Thank you so much, Sasha. Unfortunately, our time is up. Is there anything you’d like to tell our readers before we finish?

Sasha: Don’t be afraid to take risks and follow your heart. Most of the time you’ll end up hurt, but those few times when you don’t – they’re worth it all.

Anna Parker’s life disintegrates with one phone call. Her dad’s selling their ritzy New York City condo because her Wall Street banker mom emptied their bank account and ran off with another man. Which means Anna has to drop out of her elite college and move with Dad back to their small Ohio hometown. Anna’s determined to reclaim her life ASAP, so she’ll use the next few months to save money, help Dad get back on his feet, and find and confront her mom.
But Anna doesn’t anticipate things going so wrong. The only job she can get is working as a lunch lady in an elementary school. Their money-pit duplex is falling apart around their feet. And her dad is depressed without her mom, who’s proving hard to find.

One bright spot in the chaos is Gavin Metcalf, a kindergarten teacher she dated when they were young teens. With his easy wit and sexy smiles, he makes her forget her stresses—and the fact that her boyfriend Steven back in New York doesn’t know the truth yet about her dire circumstances. When past and present collide, Anna has to decide where her future lies…

Excerpt

“Holy shit,” Bianca breathed into my ear. “Gavin’s staring at you like he wants to eat you alive.”

That got my blood pumping even more, but I gave her a casual smile without looking at him to confirm. I was kinda disturbed by how much I wanted to though. “Huh. That’s interesting.”

The grin she shot me was filled with knowing. “Yeah. It is. You should go say hi.”

“I don’t need to say hi, and I don’t want to.” I raised my arms in the air with the rest of the crowd on the floor.
“Are you afraid?” she challenged.
I scoffed. “Afraid of what?”
“Afraid that the attraction you feel for Gavin is stronger than what you feel for this rich dude you’re dating.”

Shit. Nailed it in one. My cheeks flamed, and I dropped my arms. The truth I’d been trying to run from was thrust right in my face. I could blame my self-honesty right now on the alcohol buzz, but that wasn’t it. Gavin drew me closer, even as he aggravated me. Today at work I’d studiously avoided him while serving. He was a dangerous distraction, a temptation I couldn’t handle.

I didn’t want to be that girl. One cheater in the family was enough.

Bianca thrust a few bucks in my hand. “Can you get us water? Talk or don’t talk to him—I won’t push. But if he’s impacting you this much, you shouldn’t ignore that to stay with someone who doesn’t put a tingle in your vajingle.” With a knowing look, she shoved me off the floor.

Book Blitz: Bending the Rules by L. K. Lewis

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Publication date: April 1, 2014

Find Bending the Rules on: Amazon Goodreads

“Drake isn’t just someone I love, he’s the one I love the most in this world. He’s my best friend, my breath, my everything. I realize in this moment that the true reason I’m on this journey to find Drake is not just because I miss him and want him back, I’m also missing a huge part of me. Until we’re together again, my life isn’t complete. Without him I’m not whole.”-Morgan

“… I’m so sorry I couldn’t go to you. It was nearly impossible not to but Morgan we wouldn’t be standing here right now if I had. You found me Baby. When you met me on your first day at Baylor what seems like a lifetime ago you found me. Only this time I’m not letting you go.”-Drake

Struggling to get her life back on track after being left suddenly and inexplicably by (secret) boyfriend –not- boyfriend and boss Drake Baylor Jr., Morgan Lane searches the globe to find Drake knowing that the only way to truly live the life she’s worked so hard for is with him by her side.

Banished to Zurich, Switzerland by his father after being caught Breaking the Rules, Drake has nine months to get the European Division of Baylor Industries back on track. Again, he must obey the rules so that he can hopefully return to his life with Morgan and take the helm of Baylor Industries.

Everything is going according to plan as usual for Adrian Thompson who has just gotten Drake banished to Switzerland as part of his plan to get Morgan (his college sweetheart and hopefully future trophy wife) back in his life for good. With a little help from Lana Lane, Morgan’s mother, Adrian is hoping to have Morgan wearing his ring by New Year’s Eve.

After a few months of being wooed by old flame and now boss Adrian, and without so much as a word from Drake, Morgan hesitantly accepts Adrian’s invitation to join him for New Year’s Eve in St.Moritz Switzerland. Foiling Adrian’s plan, a “chance encounter” finds Morgan back in Drake’s arms.

Will Drake and Morgan be able to overcome the distance and time that is now between them along with a few of the hurdles that life has thrown their way? Morgan and Drake are once again faced with figuring out how to start their new future together- this time not Breaking the Rules, only Bending them.

Interviewing Drake and Morgan
I recently sat down with Drake Baylor Jr. and the love of his life, Morgan Lane for a candid interview discussing love, loss, and the risks they’ve taken while bending or sometimes even breaking the rules.

Morgan, after his departure you searched the globe for Drake, hoping to find him and bring him home. What made you so determined that you would find him?
From the moment we met, Drake and I have had a connection; as cliché as that sounds. We tried to stay away from each other knowing what would happen if we were caught breaking the stupid rules Drake’s dad set for him. We were careless and we got caught by Adrian in Vegas. Within a matter of days my world had crumbled around me. I no longer had the job and career I had worked so hard for. Drake had dropped out of my life and I felt hopeless. Drake Sr.’s words tore right through me as he said Drake would already be off in the arms of someone else, but even as I heard them, I knew something wasn’t right. Drake Sr. tried to tell me that he had dissolved his son’s position and that Drake wanted nothing to do with me, but I still felt our connection. I knew he had been sent somewhere as a punishment, I just had to figure out where. Having nothing but time on my hands, I set out to find Drake and bring him home. It wasn’t so much that I was determined I’d be able to find him, more like I didn’t know how to move on with my life without him.
But you weren’t able to find him…
Sadly no. And I was able to find a way to continue living my life without him in it but I was devastated. I never gave up on him though, and now that I have Drake back, I never have to.

Drake, you were understandably miserable in Zurich. What kept you going during that time, and how did you manage not to repeat past behavior with women, drugs, and alcohol?
It’s not what kept me going, but who…this beautiful woman sitting right next to me. I made the selfish mistake of flying Morgan out to Vegas for the weekend. I missed her, and wanted her out there with me. If I would have kept my head down, and returned home to her when the weekend was over we wouldn’t have missed that time together. I am a big believer that what happens always happens for a reason though. Perhaps the time we spent apart reaffirmed what we already knew, which was that we wanted to be together forever. Knowing that if I stayed the course and did my job in Zurich I could be together with Morgan again kept me together and focused. Being with Morgan was all I needed to push through every day. As far as past behavior, I don’t need anything or anyone to make me feel complete. Using drugs and women in the past was my way of filling the hole in my heart left by my mother’s death and my father’s absence. Morgan makes me feel whole. She’s the only one I see. The way I dealt with things in the past is no longer on my radar.

Morgan, do you ever worry that the mistakes Drake has made in his past will come back to hurt him?
No, I’ve never worried about that. Drake has been completely open and honest with me about his past. There isn’t anything that could surface about him that I’m not already aware of. We’ve all made mistakes before and I’m so proud of Drake for turning his life around and not repeating that cycle of behavior. He lives his life determined to make each day better than the last. If any part of his past should try hurt his future I’ll be right by his side supporting him.

Drake, how did it feel reading Morgan’s emails, knowing you couldn’t answer them?
Morgan’s emails were heartbreaking. Knowing I was the one causing the pain and with just a quick email or phone call I could explain everything and put us back on the right path was soul crushing. Morgan knows what she means to me, and to see her so heartbroken that she was questioning whether or not I would come back to her was really hard to read. I appreciated her honesty though. Each email she wrote me, however hard it was to read, still renewed my focus to return to her without further breaking any rules because by writing to me, it meant she still cared.

Drake, how hard was it not to turn around when you heard Morgan calling your name in the airport in Paris?
I took that trip to Paris to get away from Zurich for the weekend and clear my head. I was missing my girl and needed to feel close to her without screwing up in any way. That is why I chose to go to Paris. Morgan loves it there and we’ve talked about spending time there together so many times that I thought a weekend in Paris would renew my focus in doing my job so I could go home to her. When I saw Morgan in the airport I felt completely gutted. I was twenty feet away from her as she walked around that mom tying her kid’s shoes. I wanted so badly to call her name, or run up to her and throw my arms around her and just hold on forever but I knew I couldn’t. Morgan knows I trust her completely. I knew she wouldn’t have told a soul that we saw each other, but even so, I couldn’t risk it. My dad was a very connected man, and it would have only taken one person to recognize me with Morgan and report back to him and it would have been over. I think it was even harder for me not to turn around that day when Morgan called my name than it was to leave for Zurich in the first place. I could hear the excitement and the sadness in her voice as she called to me. Watching her collecting her bag then hailing a cab completely defeated and heartbroken is a feeling I never want to have again.

Morgan, how did it feel to learn that Adrian lied to you and really was responsible for Drake being sent to Zurich?
Because of our history, it was a really crappy to learn Adrian had lied to me. I knew in my heart that we would never be together and that Drake has always been the one for me, but knowing that all of Adrian’s motives to get me back weren’t pure was disappointing because he’s always been a better person than that. I could go on and on about how Adrian is responsible for my separation from Drake, and how that makes him such an a-hole, but the truth is, Drake and I broke the rules. We knew the risks and we took them anyway because we love each other so much that any risk is worth it if it means we are together. Drake didn’t have to fly me out there and take such a risk, and I didn’t have to go. If we hadn’t broken the rules, we wouldn’t have been caught and it was our penance to pay. It was the worst time I’ve ever had in my life, but it brought us here today, so it was worth it in the end.

Drake, what is it that you love so much about Morgan?
You’ve been in this room the past twenty minutes right? (laughing) First of all, my girl here is a complete knockout. I get lost in her eyes daily. I have to ask her to repeat herself all the time and she thinks I’m not listening to her but the truth is, I’m so mesmorized by her beauty I completely zone out. Besides her undeniable beauty, Morgan is so bright, and determined, and she loves so fiercely. She doesn’t judge me and my faults, she loves me despite them. She has a smart mouth the fires me up like no other too. She’s the total package and I thank my lucky stars every day that she loves me just as much as I love her.

Morgan, now that you and Drake can be together as a couple out in the open, what are you looking forward to?
I’m just ready to start our life together. I’m excited to go on double dates with Amanda and Garrett, and to start crossing things off our bucket list. Drake and I both dream big, and have already started to see some of our dreams coming true and I can’t wait to live the rest of our lives as we want to. The only rules we want to live by are the ones we make for ourselves.

Drake, any final thoughts?
No, I think my girl summed it up pretty well. We have the world at our finger tips, and couldn’t be more excited to go explore. (Turns to Morgan,) By the way Babe, speaking of Amanda and Garrett, we have lunch plans with them…something tells me ours isn’t the only one we’ll be planning in the near future…

Book Blitz: The Boyfriend List by R. S. Novelle

Genres: New Adult, Romance

Publication date: February 10, 2014

Find The Boyfriend List on: Amazon Barnes & Nobles Smashwords

The Boyfriend List follows twenty-year-old Reagan in her quest for the perfect relationship after a somewhat tragic spring break breakup leaves her disillusioned about love… again.

Reagan had always prided herself on making levelheaded, practical, analytical decisions about everything. Everything, that is, except where guys are concerned. Which was proven to her, once again, when her “boyfriend” opts to take another girl on their oh-so-romantic trip to his lake house. In order to prevent future heartbreak, she creates a checklist of all the qualities she wants in a man, and vows not to give her heart away again until she can determine if they fit every last criteria.

After scouring campus with her two best friends in her tricky journey, her detective work returns a pile of unworthy rejects, and it seems as though her choices are narrowed down to only two options: the hot stranger who’s inspired her new project, and her best guy friend Ian, who she’s always kept at bay due to his perceived playboy reputation.

Reagan gets more than she bargained for with her new set of rules, however, and is surprised to find that love, and the perfect boyfriend, may have been within reach the entire time. But will Ian’s reputation ruin his chances to prove his worth? And can Reagan let go of her insecurities long enough to even give him a chance?

The Boyfriend List is a light, New Adult romance about friendship, trust, and learning to let go in order to embrace what real love can offer.

Maybe she needed to get some fresh air, she decided. Go for a walk, clear her head. Anything to distract her focus from her thoughts and reset her mind back on her paper.
Decision made. She shut down her computer, set aside her books and wrapped her long hair into a somewhat sloppy bun on the top of her head. Reagan had contemplated a light sweatshirt to ward off the last cold brisk of winter that clung to the night air in stubborn resignation, then decided against it. But before she’d even left her bedroom, she turned back and yanked it off her bed after all. Apparently she was having a hard time making up her mind about everything that night.
Zipping it halfway up her torso, just below her breasts, she crept quietly out the front door and turned to lock it behind her. A quick breeze whipped its way around the corner and down the corridor, and as a shiver worked its way up her spine, she was thankful she’d listened to her intuition. Maybe she should do that more often.
But just as Reagan turned to go down the stairs and head out on her walk, she was met – nearly head on – by an unexpected sight. Ian stood before her, mildly drunk but mostly sober, looking as surprised to see her as she was to see him. It was clear he’d been out for a night of fun, though she’d seen him far worse on more occasions than she could count on both hands. But it was also just as clear that, once again, he’d come home alone. She couldn’t help the little smirk of satisfaction that turned up at the corners of her mouth on that discovery, though internally she chastised herself at the thought.
“And just where do you think you’re going?” His voice danced over the words with dramatic flair, an indicative side effect of his inebriated condition.
It took her a minute to find her voice. “I need a break.” She finally explained, “This essay’s killing me and I want to clear my head.”
“Nice jacket.” He flicked the toggle of her zipper, and Reagan felt it flutter in her core. “Want some company?”
The flutter was moving faster at the suggestion. His eyes had grown dark, almost as dark as the night sky, and she thought she saw something in them that begged her to say yes. Suddenly, she wasn’t so sure she needed her sweatshirt any longer, since the temperature seemed to have risen up all around her, working a pink tint into her cheeks. She was glad it was so dark out, hopefully he couldn’t tell this time. “Aren’t you just getting in though? You’re probably tired…right?”
Please say yes, please say yes, please say yes… she chanted in her head. The truth was she very much would’ve loved his company, maybe a little too much, but she wasn’t certain she trusted herself around him yet…alone…in the middle of the night. There were too many possibilities, too many temptations that her imagination could come up with. If she acted on any one of them, and was wrong in her assumption, well the let down could be brutal at best.
“Tired? Me?” He shook his head and made a face at the suggestion. “The party was just getting boring. Too many of the same people, not worth the time.” Was he implying that she was worth his time then? Reagan certainly hoped so, considering how long they’d been friends. But she couldn’t help wondering if there was something more behind the words. “So what do you say? Can I walk with you?” And as he tilted his head in that subtle way that only Ian could, a dimple working it’s way into the corner of his cheek, she felt her breath rush out of her lungs.
He’d put the ball back in her court again. Damn him! There’d be no getting around it this time, she’d have to give him a definitive answer. And quickly. Reagan knew she should say no. There was something inside, warning her that it wasn’t a good idea. As though accepting his innocent invitation would somehow change things. Alter their relationship and shift their energies toward one another in a way that could never be put back again. But, when she really thought about it, hadn’t they kind of done that already?
And yet everything inside of her wanted to scream yes, and keep the momentum of what they’d started earlier in the day moving forward. It wanted to let him take her hand in his, entwine her fingers around his, as though it was the most natural thing in the world for them to be doing. All she could manage though was a simple nod, stiffened by the breath she held tightly in her chest. It was almost as though she was afraid to acknowledge what she wholeheartedly wanted, even to herself, because doing so would only leave her open and vulnerable to a future of regrets and failures.

Love at first sight was never so dangerous.

Jack Gunnison has a problem, well, two actually, one is 5’5″ and the other…a Killer.

Jennifer Stewart needs a change after losing her husband and sending her daughter off to college.

Moving to the high country of Colorado to restart her life and, follow her dreams, Jenn gets more than she bargained for when she attracts the eye of a killer.

Together, Jack and Jenn must figure out his identity, before he strikes again.

Mature readers only due to erotic content and language.

“Jesus, what are you doing to me?” He whispered. “Nothing,” I gasped, when his tongue circled my ear. “Baby, if that’s nothing, you’re gonna kill me when it means something.”

This was a sexy, cute, and fast paced read that left me smiling and itching to turn the pages.

❄︎ The Story ❄︎

After her daughter goes off to college and husband dies in an accident, Jennifer decides to move to her dream state of Colorado.
It’s there she runs into the arrogant and bossy Jack Gunnison. He instantly has his eyes on her but Jack isn’t the only one… a killer has also set his sights on Jennifer.

❄︎ The Characters ❄︎

∙Jennifer

“You made time for a woman like Jenn, if you didn’t, someone else would.”

She was one sassy character! She definitely kept Jack on his toes. Although she did cause some very unnecessary drama, for the most part she was an interesting and enjoyable character. I liked how passionate she was about everything she did… her work, her friendships, everything.

∙Jack

Christ, I sound like a goddamned Hallmark card at the thought of possessing her heart. Fuck.

If you’re a fan of Kristen Ashley’s alpha males, the Jack is for you. He could be bossy and demanding and I loved reading about how amused he was when Jennifer didn’t listen to him!

∙The Killer

Wasn’t quite expecting who it turned out to be… definitely caught me by surprise

❄︎ Overall ❄︎

A highly entertaining read that’s perfect for anybody who’s a fan of Kristen Ashley, loves sassy heroines or alpha males!

“You and Barry got something going on I need to know about?”

I looked up at Jack and watched his jaw go tight, as he watched Barry walk away.

“Um, no, we’re just friends. He took me for coffee once when I first moved here, and we bump into each other from time to time.”

“Good, keep it that way; I don’t like to share.”

“Share? I’m not sure I’m ready for any type of relationship, Jack.”

“Babe, you may not be ready, but that’s not going to stop me from changing your mind.” He replied smiling, his rough voice washing over me. Damn. My traitorous heart liked hearing that and started racing. My head told me to run, but I stupidly listened to my heart, and I smiled back at him. (I know, I know, it’s that damn smile.)

“Ok, Jack,” I whispered in reply. Jack’s smile turned to a sexy grin and then his eyes dropped to my lips. I sucked in a breath as his head lowered, his lips gently brushing mine. A warm tingle coursed through my body, as he wrapped both arms around me and crushed me to his chest. We were in public, but I didn’t care.
Jack deepened the kiss, his hand coming up my back and into my hair, securing me deeper into him. Slowly the kiss ended, and he lets me go. I took a wobbly step back and looked up at him. Jack’s brow moved together in reflection, like he was working something out in his head. Then he smiled and my knees got weak.

“Now that’s more like it, boy.” I turned my head to see Lorraine grinning from ear to ear. My face flushed in embarrassment, and Jack just grunted, grabbed my hand, pulled me towards the door, and then mumbled. “You got that right.

Title: In Finn’s Heart

No synopsis available.

• Welcome to Uniquely Portable Magic, Roxie! Tell us about yourself.

Hi! Thanks for having me today! I’m a writer mama who lives in Texas. I write steamy romantic suspense as Roxie Rivera and scorching hot paranormal and sci-fi romance as Lolita Lopez.

• What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

I really enjoyed writing the scene from In Jack’s Arms where Abby realizes that Jack’s love language is showing her how much he loves her instead of just telling her. He’s just drawn her this lovely, steamy bath, brought her a glass of wine and then he’s climbing in with her. She thinks about all the ways he’s always there for her—and all the ways he’ll always be there in the future.

• While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

I often feel that way when writing. It’s not uncommon for me to start crying when I’m writing those black moments that happen in every romance novel.

• Which character speaks the loudest, to you?

Hadley, the heroine from the upcoming book In Finn’s Heart, really spoke to me. Our four-year-old daughter has the same heart defect as Hadley so I often found myself wondering what hopes—and fears—she might have in twenty years. It was definitely an emotional experience.

• What’s more important: characters or plot?

In romance, I think characters are paramount. When I pick up a romance novel, I want to feel what the characters feel. I want to take the journey with them—and to do that I have to connect with them. Writing flawed, multi-dimensional characters who feel like real people is the easiest way to make that connection between my books and my readers. If they aren’t invested in the characters, the niftiest plot in the world won’t matter at all because they might not make it beyond the first few chapters, you know?

• What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I think it’s hardest to hear that a reader felt let down by a story. I realize readers have so many choices so I always want to deliver a book that blows them away. When I miss that mark, I take note and strive to ensure the next book hits all the reader feel-good spots.

Best compliment? I always enjoy hearing from readers who tell me that one of my books got them through a rough spot. When kiddo was going through her many heart surgeries as a baby, I used to devour stacks of romance novels while in waiting rooms and ICUs. To know that I can give someone the same escape? It’s a really great feeling. ☺

• Any writing rituals?

I like music when I write. Iced tea is good too. And Raisinets!

• If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be?

Just keep swimming!

• You have to wear a t-shirt with one word on it for the rest of your life. Which word do you choose?

Happy!

• Any last thoughts for our readers?

Thanks so much for giving the Connolly brothers or my big, sexy Russians a try. ☺

Would you risk everything for love?

Life has held nothing but hardships for Hunter Bane. Growing up with a learning disability wasn’t easy, especially when you’re poor. With only his brother to support him, Hunter clings to the short moments of happiness in life. Like when he meets Autumn Blakewood.

Autumn Blakewood is a geek at heart. Reading is her passion, and she can’t spend one day without her books. She’s always locked up in her room studying, trying to avoid trouble. Until Hunter comes into her life.

Hunter can’t resist the temptation to get closer to Autumn. She is his complete opposite, and yet he’s drawn to her in ways he can’t explain. But when his brother is caught dealing drugs and sent to prison, Hunter’s world shatters.

To save his brother, Hunter has to join the gang he’s feared his entire life. Now he’s forced to choose between his family and the one girl he loves. Fighting for both, his fury is all he needs…

My forehead leans against hers as I gaze into her deep blue eyes that are full of longing. I want her to believe me, to trust in me, to feel that I need her. I didn’t want her to get hurt because of me, but I can’t stay away any longer. I need her more than anything. She is my drug and I’m giving in to my addiction.
I lick and bite my lip in anticipation, waiting for her to let me in. I can’t stop wanting her, but if she really doesn’t want me the same way I do then I’ll have no choice but to stop. “Tell me what you want. What you really need. Do you want me to let you go? Do you want me to stop hunting for you?” I whisper.
I’m pleading in my head for her to say ‘no.’ I look her in the eye, telling her without words that this is what I desire the most. She takes in a deep breath and opens her mouth.
When she says, “Kiss me. I want you to kiss me,” I’m done for.
I press my lips on top of hers like before, taking it slow and easy this time. It felt like I was dying of thirst, but now, after knowing she’s okay with it, I’m much calmer. I take her lips in slow, lavish licks, kissing her with every ounce of my love.
She shivers in my arms as I hold onto her tight, pulling her closer to me. She kisses me back tenderly, her lips as caring and soft as she is. Her hot mouth is driving me insane. She’s the only one who can do this to me.
She’s turning to mush in my arms, and I love how it feels, so powerful, so intense. My instincts take over as I grab her hands and pin them above her head. I alternate my kisses with nibbles, arousing her so much she moans out loud. My cock responds with enthusiasm, poking against the fabric of my pants, eager to take her.
Before I know it, my hands are slipping down her body, along her waist, and to her thighs, my fingers desperate to squeeze that tight ass of hers. Her arms find their way to my chest, and I love how she feels me up, desperate to get a hold of me. She twines her arms around my neck, giving me full access to her skin. I kiss my way to her neck, finally able to press my lips on that one spot I know winds girls up. She starts panting, and then I know I’ve hit the sweet spot.
I’ve waited so long for this that it takes every fiber of my being not to pick her up and bang her against the car right now. She’s a virgin, and I don’t want to make her do things she’s not ready for. She’s never been fucked, and that’s all I ever do. I don’t make love. I bang girls, take them in whatever position I like. I’m not so sure she’s even been kissed like this before.
But shit, this is fucking hot.
I pull back for a second, breathing out my horniness. “God, that dress,” I groan. “Why’d you have to put that on?”
“Couldn’t come to the party in a pair of sweatpants,” she mutters.
She giggles when I leave little pecks on her collarbone, peeking down into her dress. I can already see the swell of her tits, primed and ready for me to cup and lick the crown. “Hmmm …” I rest my head on her shoulder, nibbling on her earlobe. “You look so damn hot … You don’t wanna know what goes on in my mind when you’re all dressed up like this. It’s too dirty to handle,” I whisper.
I can feel the goose bumps forming on her body as my hands slide down her arm. “Although I wouldn’t mind the sweatpants either. Easier to take off.”
Although nothing beats her sex appeal in this black dress. Damn.
I suckle on her earlobe and move back to her lips again, leaving hickeys all over her neck. My hand shifts to her ass and I squeeze tight, feeling her perky flesh in my fingers. She gasps. Hot fucking Jesus. Now I really want to come inside her.
Our lips are locked, our eyes closed, and my mind is whirring with thoughts about stripping her bare. When she grasps my hair and tugs me closer my cock thumps in my pants. My fingers slide down her leg and move up her dress, slowly getting closer to her most sensitive spot. God, I wonder if she’s ever been touched there. I’d like to be the first.
I’m fucking her with my mouth, my tongue going crazy as I press my cock against her thigh. Sweet Jesus. We’re not even naked yet and I already feel like I want to make her scream my name.

Book Blitz: Black Amaranth by Sasha Hibbs

Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy

Find on: Amazon Goodreads

Eighteen-year-old Ally Watson arrives home from high school graduation, more than a little annoyed that her Uncle Argyle—Ally’s legal guardian and only surviving relative—didn’t even bother showing up. But instead of berating him for his forgetfulness, Ally finds him in a life-or-death battle with a monster. Argyle manages to kill the creature, and gives Ally a parcel containing a destiny she never knew existed.

Ally, along with her best friends Michael, Jessica, and David, hurry to Georgia to uncover the truth of Uncle Argyle’s secrets, and the meaning of the mysterious marks that Ally bears. Are the marks related to the blacksmith mythology of her ancestors? Who are these heavenly warriors who show up in the oddest of places? And will an ancient gypsy curse destroy the very things Ally fights to save?

Black Amaranth: a simple flower, a symbol with an ancient legacy, a conduit for prophecy…while faith and hope are essential to the journey, Ally soon discovers that love is the most powerful force of all.

“Stay, girl.” Ally pointed her finger down at the porch. Miss Elma was obedient, sliding her long muscled legs down, crossing them over top each other and resting her head on her large paws. “Good girl.”

Ally stepped in behind of Parthenia, leaving the rest to trail in after her. Ally looked around in awe. She had never been in a bar before, and wasn’t too disappointed by the one she was standing in now. Red booths lined the unevenly cut board and batten walls, and a few were occupied by men and women who stared directly at them. Round tables just big enough for two were scattered throughout, leading up to a large empty dance floor. Strings of colored bulbs hung down low from the walls, casting dim shadows that mixed in with smoky air. Bar stools surrounded the long slab bar, while behind it a large, intimidating man eyed them up as he casually wiped his hands off on a white towel.

“Hello, Lou,” Parthenia said. “Denaulda around?”

He jerked his head in the direction of the stage, Parthenia following the line of his gaze, sighed softly and said, “Great.”

“Remember me just saying that Gypsies were gifted with a particular talent? Strong magic?” Parthenia whispered close to Ally’s ear.

“Uh-huh,” Ally said, looking straight ahead to the empty stage.

“Well, you’re about to find out what Denaulda’s is,” Parthenia said, sitting on a barstool and turning to face the stage. “Might as well have a seat and try to stay there.”

Michael and Dave eased down into an empty booth, leaving the opposite side open for the girls. Eli and Brandi opted to sit with Parthenia on barstools.

At the corner of the wooden stage, men were pulling out and tuning guitars and harmonicas. As a slow sultry rhythm played out of their instruments, a petite, dark-haired woman emerged from behind beaded curtains onto the stage. She slinked her way up to the microphone stand like a snake closing in on its prey. She curled her slender fingers around the mic as she cocked her head to the side, looking at her audience with thoughtful, heavy-lidded eyes. Ally’s arms erupted in goose bumps, a surefire warning that something otherworldly was about to happen.
She began to sing, sound floating dreamingly out of her mouth, weaving in and around the crowd like an invisible serpent, creeping up around their heels, sliding up and into their souls.

Michael and Dave twisted around, their heads following the direction of the eerie tune as Jessica mechanically stood up from the bench.

“What are you doing?” Ally whispered between her teeth while tugging on Jessica’s sleeve.

“Just one…dance.” Jessica didn’t look down at Ally; she walked slowly onto the dance floor as though the melody willed her to do so. Problem was, Jessica was a wallflower, or at least when they went to the prom Ally couldn’t peel her away from
the wall if her life depended on it.

Ally looked around wondering if Denaulda’s music was having the same effect on everyone else. Brandi smiled naughtily which told Ally there must have been some part of her that expected this. Beside her, Eli watched Jessica through burning eyes. A few patrons joined Jessica on the dance floor, swaying back and forth to the beat, their bodies sweeping in and out in circular motions.

From the wall, a steely gaze followed Jessica. A boy with a shock of blond hair materialized from the shadows and inched his way towards the dance floor. He didn’t look much older than they did but he carried himself like a prowling marauder. His arms encircled Jessica’s waist as he closed the distance between them. To Ally’s surprise, Jessica welcomed him.
Denaulda’s lips curled up into a wicked smile. The tune hung in the air, like a poisonous gas. Ally couldn’t ignore the soothing, rich words.

When we were young and full of life
you reached in deep, and pierced my heart with a knife.
The night cries out, sweet and high,
weeping for her children with a gentle sigh.
Young nights, young nights, where did you go?
I can smell the night air, and how the moonlight glowed.
Young nights, young nights, come back to the home we both know.

“Where’s Lucy?” Dave kept his eyes fixed on Denaulda. “I think I should…” Dave’s words drifted off into the chorus.

Jessica reached her hands up and tangled her fingers into the thick blond hair of the boy she’d glued herself to. They appeared to only have eyes for each other as though no one else existed in the room. Ally was ready to get up and separate the two when another wave of lyrics poured out from Denaulda, nailing Ally to her seat.

I have loved you tender and loved you long,
but you were caught in the crossfire, we got it all wrong.
Can we ever go back to the way it used to be?
Young nights under the Spanish moss, just you and me.
I can smell the night air, and how the moonlight glowed.
Young nights, young nights, come back to the home we both know.

Ally couldn’t budge. “Michael?” She looked up, knowing he would fix this, but when she met his eyes, her breath caught in the back of her throat. Heat spread up through her face as his blue eyes bored into hers. The Michael staring at her now wasn’t looking at her as friends look at one another, but as something much different: as a man who looks, really looks, at a woman. Without Denaulda’s enchanting music, Ally wondered if his penetrating gaze would have bothered her or not.

Eli crossed the floor in long strides, catching Ally’s attention. She sat there unable to move, nervous, knowing that the direction Eli was currently going in wasn’t a good one. Eli’d had a chip on his shoulder since they all met, but more so towards Jessica than the rest of them. Ally just didn’t know why, though.

“Enough.” Ally could barely hear what Eli was saying to Jessica over the music. Denaulda looked entertained by what was transpiring on the dance floor. Jessica paid no attention to him, moving in closer to her partner, so close you couldn’t wedge a piece of paper between them.

Eli’s lips twisted into a snarl as he grabbed Jessica’s wrist. The next few moments happened before Ally could fully register what she was seeing. The blond boy swung at Eli, whose hand cupped the boy’s fist, holding him there effortlessly. He jerked Jessica to the side, causing her to rock on her heels, attempting to balance herself. He flung the boy’s fist down in disgust. “You’re done here,” Eli said to the boy through clenched teeth.

“Oh, no we’re not,” Jessica said, seething and stepping away from Eli, going back into the arms of her dance partner.

Eli growled as he grabbed her arm. Jessica spun around and slapped Eli across the face, sending an echo throughout the bar.

“Do not ever touch me again!” Jessica’s face reddened, almost matching the color of her hair. “Do you understand me?”

Eli stood there blinking in disbelief, raising a hand up to where hers had just been.

“Okay, boys.” Denaulda motioned for the band behind her to stop. “I think it’s time for a break.”

Blog Tour: Finding What Is by Tabitha Vohn

Finding What Is is sad but eye-opening story that’ll stick with you once you finish.

What I loved about this book was that Tabitha Vohn took the typical ‘student-teacher infatuation’ and ‘girl loves best friend’ and put a spin to the story. Something that keeps the reader completely interested in what is going on.

Willie and Professor Shane’s relationship is a slow burn… but eventually turns into something more. He teaches her creative writing class and, as they begin to learn more about each other, discover how they both have an appreciation for paintings and art. They’re drawn together and know it’s forbidden (which makes it all the more sweeter) but despite her attraction to him, Willie feels like she can’t trust him.

She also has another man in her life, Xavier. They both still have strong feelings for each other. When tragedy strikes Willie and she’s left without her mother, Xavier allows her to come live with him… and his girlfriend.

It’s a unique story with depth and captivating plot.

She shares her home with a man who calls himself “uncle” (who stalks her through the house, naked). Her closest friends are a band of misfits who’ve forged their own way in life-including Xavier, who has carved his name in her soul- and her heart is torn between him and a college professor, a fellow artist who wants more than a student-teacher relationship.

Willie stands on the brink of womanhood poised to follow in her mother’s footsteps, with a gleaming future as an artist looming before her, and a maturity beyond her years that has enabled her to be the protector and caretaker of others, a mender of wounds. But as a devastating illness rips her mother from her life, Willie is left bereft of a home and of a sense of self. Guided only by her instincts, Willie wanders from her Professor’s arms to the home that Xavier shares with his live-in girlfriend Nicole (who insists that they can “share”). Her path becomes a search for peace, for family, for a love that’s real, and for her place in this world.

Finding What Is chronicles the journey that we all must take-to find ourselves, to reconcile our past, and to get back to that place we once called home.

About the author: Tabitha is a pen name. Her creator is a certified bookworm, thanks to the countless fairy tales, Bible stories, and nursery rhymes she was read as a child, and the Gothic, Romantic, and Contemporary novels she enjoys today. She has earned a B.A. in English and a M.A. in Teaching, and currently teaches high school English.

On Writing, Tabitha says, “I strive to write the type of stories that I enjoy reading. Ones that question those blurred lines between love and lust, between good and evil. Ones that make us question human nature while simultaneously seeing the beauty in it as well.”
